Patagonia Unbounded offers the perfect blend of stunning scenery, rugged terrain, 4-star hotels, nature camping, and adventurous hikes, along with a tyrolian river crossing, sure to satisfy travelers that want to experience a blend of adventure and exploration made easy. This adventure is perfect for explorers who are active and can comfortably hike up to 5 miles a day. Patagonia is sure to take your breath away and the El Chaltén region and Argentina’s Glaciers National Park is the crown jewel.

Our journey will bring us into the park for 5 days of trekking through some of the most rewarding terrain in Patagonia, with opportunities to get close or even onto the ancient ice.

We will navigate you through this land of legend and pioneers, and provide you with an experience that you will never forget. Spend 4 nights in nice hotels and 4 nights camping in Patagonia, enjoying the peace and serenity of this incredible place. Camping gear (tents and sleeping bags) are provided and will be transported by sherpas, and will be waiting for you when you arrive in the evening. Food will prepared for you each day you are on the trail. The nights spent in hotels create the perfect combination of comfort and roughing it. Guides and sherpas will be there every step of the way ensuring your needs are met. Along the way you will be able to learn about the climate and region from our knowledgeable team of guides, as well as some ancient skills such as tracking and wilderness sufficiency and awareness techniques.

Known as the “Trekking Capital of Argentina,” El Chaltén is found nestled at the base of the dramatic and jagged saw edges of the Andean peaks and just beneath the granite spires of Mount Fitz Roy (Cerro Chatlén). This is one of the most recognizable and iconic mountains in the world, Mount Chaltén (Fitz Roy) translates from the native Tehuelche to mean, “the smoking mountain.” On this trip to Patagonia you will have the chance to experience this place first hand and all that it has to offer. The 4 days of camping are balanced perfectly with nights spent in hotels. This is a true adventure for people interested in Patagonia a travel experience that will be incredible and unforgettable.

Patagonia Unbound Itinerary

Printable 9-day itinerary here. It is possible for the itinerary to change or adjust due to weather or another reason we don't even know about yet. Every group is different so we're always happy to adjust based on the specific interests of the group.

+ Day 1: El Calafate

Welcome to El Calafate! You will be met at the airport and transported to the beautiful and Xelena Hotel & Suites overlooking Lake Argentina. Today is a day to relax and get settled into your comfortable accomodations after a long day of traveling. Later enjoy meeting with fellow travelers at our Welcome Dinner of traditional Argentinian Asado (barbecue) at an estancia.

+ Day 2: El Calafate & Perito Moreno

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and pack a light bag with everything you'll need for the day. We will travel by van to Perito Moreno Glacier in Glacier National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take in the scenery on the drive to the National Park. Spend the day viewing the glacier, and have lunch in the park.

Explore the park's scenic lookouts and walkways to see the glacier from a multitude of different angle, complete with an hour-long boat ride along Perito Moreno's dramatic front side for additional spectacular views. You will be able to see the glacier from all angles along the south face of Perito Moreno. Hear and see chunks of ice fall from the glacier and splash into Lake Argentino. Learn about this natural phenomen, the park’s geology, flora and fauna along the way. Lunch is included and we will eat in the National Park.

+ Day 3: El Chalten & Laguna de Los Tres

Early wake up (7 am) and leave El Calafate after breakfast at the hotel get ready to face Patagonia. Private transport to El Chalten. Arrive in El Chaltén in the late morning. A short drive from town will bring us to El Pilar trailhead, where we will depart for our hike, which leads us to the Laguna de los Tres lookout for a close view beneath Mt. Fitz Roy’s famous face (shuttle to trailhead). (visit to the Laguna/lookout is weather dependent, occasionally high winds prevent us from reaching the Lagoon) Lunch (included) at a rest point along the trail, beneath the stunning Mt. Fitz Roy. The group will camp and eat dinner at Campamento Poincenot. There will be time for Exploration Institute curriculum/discussion. (moderate-strenuous hiking, but short distance this day aprox. 12km./ 6 hours)

+ Day 4: Laguna Torre, Glacier Grande

Wake with warm drinks and breakfast at Campamento Poincenot. There will be an option to climb back up to the lookout for a view of the granite spires painted in the light of sunrise. We will then proceed on the path, along the Madre and Hija Lagoons (mother and daughter) en route to explore the Laguna Torre and incredible Glacier Grande. From here we will also have views (weather depending) of the famous granite towers of Cerro Torre, that jet up from behind Glacier Grande!

Eat lunch near Glacier Grande and visit the lookout point. This will be around 4 hours totaly of moderate hiking today, with plenty of time to enjoy the views and time on the trail. Dinner and camp near the Laguna Torre.

+ Day 5: Tirolesa River Crossing, Laguna Toro & Tunel Glacier

After a hearty breakfast we embark on the anticipated Tyrolean river crossing, or “Tirolesa” (crossing will be set up and led by local expert). A Tyrolean river crossing is a method of getting across an open area using ropes and was developed in Switzerland. Once safely across the we will begin on our hike to Laguna Toro and the Tunel Glacier. Enjoying the scenery along the way, our day's journey will provide spectacular views of the entire region. This will be a moderately sterenuous hike of 6 hours.

+ Day 6: Paso Del Viento, Tirolesa River Crossing & Patagonian Ice Field

After breakfast at camp, we will head up to the Paso del Viento (windy pass). A steep hike and another river crossing will bring us to a view of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field from atop the mountain pass. This panoramic view from above the seemingly endless ice field is truly an incredible experience that very few people witness each year. This will be the most strenuous hike of the trip.

After descending back down to our camp at Laguna Toro we will have a satisfying group dinner and some well deserved rest. (aprox. 7-8 hours/15km. of moderate-strenuous hiking, at a slow pace) Camp overnight near Laguna Toro. (B, L , D)

+ Day 7: Return to El Chalten

After final camp breakfast, we start our return to El Chalten. The group will have the chance to practice navigating/orienteering on the last day of trekking back to Chalten. Lunch will be on the trail. P.M: We will arrive back to Chalten in the early evening. Private transport from trailhead back to a Chalten Hosteria. Free time to clean up before Group dinner in Chalten (traditional Argentinian Asado). Tour managers and guides give closing ceremony + thanks to group. (aprox. 6 hours/15km. moderate hiking this day).
